Shimeon Ernst


E. was born on 4 August 1900 in Krakow, Galicia, into a poor family.

A grandson of R' Shimele Yonover, rabbi and "good Jew" of Yanova, Pietrkow region.

He received a Chasidic education in cheders.

At the age of fourteen he went away with his parents to Eretz Yisroel, where he learned until age sixteen with the Jerusalem dayan R' Tsvi-Pesakh Frank, in the yeshiva "Lshkhs hrbnim" in Jerusalem. Afterwards he continued with his education, especially (at) the teacher's seminary of the aid society and in the last years was employed as a librarian for the city library "Shari Tzion" in Tel Aviv.

Since 1921 he published articles about writers and booklets in Yiddish, Hebrew and German-Yiddish journals.

In "Archive of the History of Yiddish Theatre and Drama" (editor Dr. Jacob Shatzky, first volume, Vilna 1930, published by the Yiddish Scientific Institute [YIVO]), E. published a large study "Tekstn un kveln tsu der geshikhte fun teater, farveylungen un maskaradn bey yidn" (pp. 5-37).

He also had various opportunities to publish articles about Purim shpiels and productions.
