Emanuel Schechter
(killed by the Nazis)

Jonas Turkow writes:

"A familiar name in Lvov (Lemberg; Lwow) was the artist and author of "Estrada" songs, Emanuel Schechter. His songs "Lvover gitare," "Varshvara," "Valdoy," Bloyz eyne," "Nor in Lvov," and many others were sung in many languages all over Poland, the Soviet Union and other countries.

In 1939 when Western Ukraine was occupied by the Soviets, the talented artist and poet was invited to Leningrad to write for a musical screenplay for the movie studio "Lenfilm." The always cheerful Emanuel Schechter could not know beforehand that on a hot summer day in 1942 he would be led away from the Lvov Jewish ghetto on a workday, to the Lvov Town Hall to color the walls.

In house number 16 on Kresover Street, in a small kitchen on the first floor, together with his wife and son and other innocent victims, geshmakht until November 1942, when on a cold, rainy November morning, the machine of the Gestapo came to the house, which led them away forever to the sand castle by Litshakov, where they were brought together with thousands of Jews from Lvov."
