CONCENTRATION CAMP MEMORIAL
SITES
Research and Resources
BERGEN-BELSEN
They
are currently redesigning their memorial and their
document center is under construction. The opening
ceremony should be in September or October 2007.
You can also contact them to confirm that someone was
an inmate there and learn the date of their arrival
and from where they came.
DACHAU
If you plan a visit, a
twenty-minute ride on the S-Bahn from Munich's Central
Station and a short bus ride from the Dachau train
station will bring you to the Dachau Concentration
Camp Memorial Site.
The Dachau Concentration
Camp memorial site opened in 1965, along with an
archive and a library. Both the archive and library
are open to the public, though a prior appointment
must be made.
There is an opportunity to make inquiries to the
Archives at the Dachau site with regard to those who
were imprisoned there. If you would like them to see
if they have any such information, please contact them
at the address listed in the directory above,
supplying them with the name of the person you are
inquiring about and, if known, the date and place of
their birth. The library at the memorial site has a
computerized register that contains data on almost
ninety percent of the more than 200,000 persons who
were imprisoned in the Dachau camps. The library
itself has many thousands of volumes of material
relating to the camp, the Holocaust, etc.
The Archive contains written documents, over
five-thousand photographs, posters, plans, original
objects, phonograms and over eight-hundred films.
There are eyewitness accounts of survivors, documents
relating to the founding and administration of the
camps, as well as documents that relate the the
post-war trials and holdings of the international
prisoner committee that was founded after liberation.
There is also material on the history of the camp
post-1945 and on the history of the Memorial Site
itself.
There are may other
sources of material, such as newspaper articles and
journal essays that have to do with the camps, the
Holocaust, the resistance, exile, Nazi post-war
trials, and more.
The website URL of the Dachau Concentration Camp
Memorial Site is
