Clara Meisels
(Friedhofer)

M. was born on 2 December 1896 in Lemberg, Galicia, to progressive parents. Due to her father's passing she was forced to abandon her studies in the gymnasium and to become a tailor.

She debuted with "amateurs" in a Yiddish production of "Di veber (The Weaver)" under the direction of Karol Adventovitsh.

In 1912 she came to Vienna, where she worked for the first time as a tailor in a factory and in the evening worked in a drama circle with the Yiddish educational union "Ferdinand Lasal".

After her marriage to Abish Meisels she entered as a professional into the Yiddish theatre and began to act with the "Freye folksbine" et al. of Itzhak Deytsh, later in other troupes in Galicia and Austria.
