Benjamin Fishbein

 

Born on 14 June 1902 in Warsaw, Poland.

He came from a traditional Yiddish education.

After 1923 he became a professional Yiddish actor in Russia.

In 1924 he came to America and performed as "Leyzer badkhan" in Gordin's "God, Man and Devil" at Glickman's Palace Theatre.

In 1928 he participated in the "Chicago Yiddish Dramatic Society" directed by and part of Joseph Buloff in the play "Shabtai tsvi" by Zhulavski, "Der zinger fun zayn troyer" by Ossip Dymov. "Shop" by H. Leivick and "Der karger" by Moliere.

In 1923 he participated in the Yiddish Art Theatre, directed by Maurice Schwartz in "Yoshe Kalb". Afterwards he began to perform with "word concerts" and for the last some twenty years, he has sung during the "Forwards" radio time.

In this span of this time he performed a special concert with the participation of prominent Yiddish actors as "Benjamin Fishbein's Lakh-nakht (Whole Night)".

F. together with Eli Mintz recorded the humorous "A lodzshen miting", "Bazukht a krankn", "Radye miks op" and "Shadkhan bureau."

In 1938 he participated in the film "Yankl der schmid" (by David Pinski, with Moishe Oysher), and in 1939, in the film "Der vilner balebesl" (also with Moishe Oysher).

F. also worked on television, in English, in the program "The Goldbergs", Columbia Broadcasting Company, and in the series "The O'Neills" on the Dumont[?] Television Company.
