The Forverts was founded on 22 April 1897 in
New York City. During its heyday its circulation was great, and at
least for the first few decades of the 1900s it had a great
influence on the political system. Today it still publishes in
Yiddish on a biweekly basis, though its circulation is far less than
the English version of its newspaper, the Forward, which is
published weekly.
On Sunday, 25 May 1947, the Yiddish Daily
Forward (Forverts) issued a fifty-year jubilee edition which
celebrated the Yiddish world through both articles and photographs.
The Museum of the Yiddish Theatre presents to you here a page from
this edition, which contains portraits of more than one hundred and
eighty actors and actresses, all members of the Hebrew Actors'
Union, as well as a photograph of the Union's Executive Council.
Although the photos are small and grainy and
wanting for clarity, it is nevertheless interesting, especially to
those who have an interest in the history of Yiddish theatre, to
look at the photographs of these fine individuals who express
themselves so well on the Yiddish stage over so many decades.
In Yiddish there is also listed identifications
of most all the individuals on display in the large photograph,
however it is not always so easy to decipher, due to the condition
of the page itself. So the Museum has created a table that
identifies every individual in the large photograph and provided it
to you below to ease any identifications you might like to make. The
photograph was stitched together from two halves of a decaying,
brittle newspaper page, so please bear any imperfections in the
image itself. The identifications within the table are organized
according to the placements of the individual photographs within the
larger, overall image. Be sure to left-click on the image below to
see the larger image. |
