My uncle Artie was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and lived the first couple of years of his life in a building on Monroe Street, at the foot of the Manhattan Bridge. He lived most of his youth on Williams Avenue, between Riverdale and Livonia Avenues, which was considered to be part of the East New York section of Brooklyn. He was the oldest of the three children born to parents Flora and Harry Ness.

In the mid to late thirties, Artie found work in Washington, D.C., working for the federal government. It was there that he met his future wife Miriam nee Hallen, whom he would marry in Brooklyn in the late 1930s.
